After 72 years, the 1930’s art-deco bus station in Derby closed on 22nd October 2005. Designed by Charles Aslin the Derby borough architect, it was the first bus station to boast of overhead canopies and double platforms. Opened in 1933 it soon went downhill and ended in terminal decline and it was rumoured that the beetles popped into the upper deck café during the sixties, but even this rumour could not save the bus station. In 1977 its death warrant was signed when permission was granted for a new replacement costing around 90 million GBP and plans to spend 8 million GBP on refurbishing the station was scrapped. This in turn prompted a heart warming episode of the bus stations history when the “Bus Station Action Group” was formed in an attempt to save it and called on Derby City Council to spend money on restoring it. Although turned down and the Council running with the upmarket Riverlights plan it was thought that the action group had failed but after its last day of closing protesters have started to occupy the bus station roof and hang banners down the sides. It is an understatement to say that this stations future has been hotly debated or opinionated as its one of those things you either love or hate. The new bus station is due to open in 2007 with 24 bus bays 5 coach bays, electronic signs shops and cashpoints (ATM’s) meantime, passengers are found wondering the streets of Derby city centre trying to find the right bus stop for their destination.
