Reporters Sans frontieres
"Don’t wait to be deprived of news to stand up and fight for it"
In some countries a journalist can be thrown in prison for years for a single offending word or photo. Jailing or killing a journalist removes a vital witness to events and threatens the right of us all to be informed. Reporters Without Borders has fought for press freedom on a daily basis since it was founded in 1985.

tilting at windmills
I've become fairly convinced that the real battlefield at the moment is the media. Without the bias and spin constantly indulged by the mainstream press (mainly tv and newspapers) I'm certain our so-called "leaders" wouldn't have had such an easy ride. Seems to me that the big boys in the media are no longer the "voice of the people" or objective and impartial reporters of events, but the mouthpiece of just a few vested and powerful interests. And that those "interests" have determinedly been setting the agenda for us lot for quite a few years now.
I'm also fairly convinced that we (as in us ordinary folk) have now got the (relatively new) means to turn the tide; a revolution in communication that's on a par with, or even more potent than, the inventing of printing and the discovery of radio. I refer of course to the Internet. All we've gotta do is learn how to use it effectively, and encourage ever greater numbers of people to engage with it.

Newswatch (very relevant despite being based in India)
Newswatch India, to borrow a worn-out dotgone cliché, is a portal. To steal another hackneyed phrase from the zillions who are quoted day in and out, we are “different”. Newswatch is a website which provides news (and occasionally, views) about what is pertinent to newspeople.

Survival International
Survival is the only international organisation supporting tribal peoples worldwide. It was founded in 1969 after an article by Norman Lewis in the UK's Sunday Times highlighted the massacres, land thefts and genocide taking place in Brazilian Amazonia. Like many modern atrocities, the racist oppression of Brazil's Indians took place in the name of 'economic growth'.
